Watering Planner
Pick your plant type and conditions. You’ll get how often to check the soil, a typical watering range, and check dates for the next four weeks.
How this planner works
It starts from typical growing-season ranges for each plant group in a medium plastic pot with medium light, then adjusts for your conditions. These are starting points — the soil check is what actually tells you to water.
| Plant group | Typical range (growing season) | Water when |
|---|---|---|
| Succulents & cacti | Every 14–21 days | Soil is completely dry |
| Snake plant, ZZ plant | Every 14–28 days | Soil is completely dry |
| Tropical foliage | Every 7–10 days | Top 1–2 in (2–5 cm) is dry |
| Moisture lovers | Every 4–7 days | Surface just feels dry |
| Herbs | Every 2–4 days | Top 1 in (2.5 cm) is dry |
Smaller pots, terracotta and bright light dry out faster; large pots, low light and winter slow everything down. Always water until it drains from the bottom, and empty the saucer after 15 minutes. Read more in how often to water houseplants and overwatering vs underwatering.
Our guides are general advice for common houseplants and edible plants grown indoors. Some popular houseplants are toxic to pets and children if eaten — check before bringing a new plant home.
